   Sounds good, but why not just give the child a standard rape-alarm that emits a very loud noise that doesn’t stop until the detachable cord is put back in?

   As an afterthought, the best design would be to use a design as the original poster suggested, but with an additional detachable cord that the child could pull themselves to trigger it without having to rely on somebody to call the pager to set it off.

   Because that relies on the child being old enough and sensible enough to pull the cord when they are in trouble. And in my experience, if you give a kid something that makes a loud noise when a cord is pulled, you can be pretty sure that they’ll be pulling it all the time…..

   Or not as the case may be. You just happen to be picking up a child who seems lost or is lost and you have this contraption strapped on the Child’s leg (presumerably). Yikes!

   As it happens the UK Prison service uses this device for low risk prisoners on parole. If the national ID scheme is ever approved then perhaps we can all have one too.

   How about using technology that would understand distance or signal strength, so when a weak signal (due to distance between transmit and recieve) the audible warning would sound automatically ?

   David, I had considered that but then the device would need two components; the parents and the childs with at least one of them being a transceiver. I thought the stand alone device might be more practical (only one thing to charge the batteries on for example) and most people have a cellphone these days anyway.

   A scenario: child is lost in supermarket, mother sends the message to a pager, pager blares out a sound loud enough to be heard throughout the store, and deafening both the helping shopper, and the customer service assistant about to announce it over the tanoy. How long until that gets banned?

   A more sensible idea is to have a locatory device, that rolls off the coordinates of the child, allowing the parent to easily locate

   someone has just emailed in suggesting we start microchipping babies at birth….. then operate some kind of radar system?!

   that is almost already available in the US where clothes/pyjamas have an RFID which triggers of an alarm when they move out of radar. I am all for getting a microchip - help stop identity theft as well.

    Hi Jake,
    How exactly does a supermarket ban such a device ? As a parent, I’m not sure I particularly care whether I am embarassing/deafening helpful shoppers/assistants as long as I get my child back.

    I agree a locatory device is optimal, however that would require additional infrastructure in the telcom network - gps doesn’t work perfectly indoors yet.

    I wasn’t aware of that. As regards banning them, presumably they will emit a signal of sorts, so they would be very easy to locate.

    Giving a mobile is a good way of making contact and locating a child (if only to trace the ringing) and/or a badge having names and Mums mobile number.

    Yell have a service where you can find the location of mobiles (With the owners registered permission).

    The system chosen will always have disadvatages. The business model must have the advantages that can be marketed efficiently.

    How about…… a set up that combined a wrist strap or foot strap) and a another powered device (possibly, but not necessarily a mobile phone of some sort) that would prompt an audible alarm if the wrist strap moved out of its proximity or was broken. Perhaps some simple RFID receiver would do the trick.

    the idea of getting microchipped is ridiculous and opens up all sorts of possibilities to the further eradication of our civil liberties and core right as a human being; being free and independent

    with regards to a child, i support some kind of concept as being discussed above its just a matter of getting the parameters right in a sensible and safe fashion.

    Having read the comments I ask myself.
    Can it be done? Answer yes.
    Would it help find my child on lets say, a crowded beach etc? Yes I think it could. If such a device was available how long would it take before some parent somewhere in the world bless moder technology?
