   When you consider how much that would cost compared to a squaddie slapping some paint on will answer your question, also, i spent 22 years on the main battle tanks and as soon as you start going x-country in the wet and muddy conditions the photographic images would be covered. There’s been loads of different styles, the ones that we see in the UK are for temparate climate, in Berlin they styled an urban cam which was just loads of different size squares which made it hard to focus on, of course, when the vehicles deploy to other climates they adopt whats best for the terrain. There was even a prototype tank which had thousands & thousands of fibre-optics over it, this meant that as you looked at it you would see what is directly behind it, good concept, but again not squaddie proof and not cost effective.

   But images of what exactly? The point of most camouflage is to break up the outline of the vehicle/person and it seems to work pretty well from what I’ve seen.

   Sounds like over engineering i.e. using technology for technologies sake. Unless there is a better reason that can beat the already cost effective solution why bother?

   my point being, was purely that there is a lot of technology out there that could be utilised that plainly isnt. the images of “what exactly?” are exactly that, whatever you need them to be of. trees, rocks, even water. Yeah ok, tanks can be splashed with mud, but they can easily be washed off again. There is no reason why “space blankets” cant be camouflaged to hide a heat signature from it’s occupant, and maybe even save a life at the end of the day. Armed forces are allocated huge budgets for the technology they need to perform their tasks, what they would spend on this technology is barely a drop in the ocean. Armed forces also have to keep abreast of modern technology, and in many ways are the source of the technology in the first place. Keep up or be left behind!

   The British DPM ( Disruptive Pattern Material) is designed to do just that…. Disrupt the pattern or outline of the person/vehicle.

   You talk about space blankets being used, they are. They’re called thermal sheeting and thay consist of a tin foil sheet sandwiched between some camouflaged outer. They’ve been in use for about 10 years now.

   a lot of camoflage isn’t to make things totally disapear into the back ground, jsut make it difficult to work out what is there. Some of the most impressive is the “dazzle camoflage” used on ships during WWII (I believe the battle ship on the thames - HMS Belfast?? still has it)

   its impossible to totally hide a ship, the biggest threat to shipping in the war was U -Boats which relied on torpedos to wreak destruction. The introduction of the dazzle camo made it hard for the subs to work out which direction the ship was traveling in and even what size ship it was, so it made it a lot harder for them to send their torpedoes to intercept the ship
