Next step: Prototype?

Here’s a well thought through idea to consider over the weekend:

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS or Vibration Induced White Finger)  is an industrial illness bought on by the use of vibrating machinery ie. drills, chainsaws, kangos etc.  The condition is so serious in potential claims that in 2005 the government passed regulations that limit the amount of “exposure” a worker can be subjected to.  Each machine has it’s own exposure rating which is calculated under laboratory conditions.  Whilst this is fine in the lab, once the machine is put to use the rating is meaningless as there are so many site variables.  My idea is to design a device that can record the level of vibration an individual is being exposed to, thus enabling the worker to monitor his/her activities and remove the risk of developing a condition.  The potential market for this is huge as many industries are affected.  The premise is simple: how do you know you are at risk if you don’t know the parameters.  Incidently, I approached my local business link with this idea in 2004 and they advised me that I would need in the region of £250k to develop it, of which they could only assist with 60%, unfortunately this was a show stopper for me.
