   I think volvo or someone like that already have something like this.

   If I remember correctly their system projects a beam either side of the vehicle and when broken this iluminates a light on the wing mirror, i.e. if a vehicle or object is in the drivers blind spot or to that side of the vehicle with in a certain range.

   I think this is a BAD idea. We should be encouraging drivers and bikers to learn to drive to a higher standard (i.e. IAM, ROSPA etc) not to rely on a gadget.

   The proximity sensors on the rear of many new vehicles would provide a useful platform on which to extend this product. i.e. as well as being used for reversing they could be activated by the bikes.

   I have thought before about sideways facing cameras placed in the front indicators of cars, so you can see what’s coming without having to stick the whole bonnet out in the road at t-junctions etc.
   Also I think I heard that Vauxhall are working on GPS tranceivers in all cars to warn of hazards around blind bends.

   How about making it obligatory for car drivers to ride a motorbike for six months before they get a car licence. Then they will see life from the bikers perspective and be far more aware of bikes in the future.

   So what you are saying is that, if all car drivers were totally conscious of bike riders there would never be a time when the car driver can be surprised by a bike appearing out of the blue?

   Bad idea, what would stop it from being triggered from someone crossing the road, or similar.
   Additionally the cost would be very high, firstly the transmitter on the bike and if you decide not to have that… at that point you are looking at some form of Radar or Laser detection especially if you want the range.
   Proximity detectors are great for simple near objects, but 30+ feet away you need something to transmit and receive, and then 30 Ft is just not enough time to process and alert and the driver take action….

   Instead we all should become better drivers and start using our eyes… they are free!

    I agree, we should all use our eyes more.
    Both car drivers and bike riders (push or motor) will always have an heart stopping moment when they are made to reflect on their driving skills and attention span.

    1. Detecting *objects* within a given range is easy, if they are not occluded, the hard thing is filtering out things that aren’t motorcycles - e.g. houses, cars. It can be done, but it costs a lot more than a simple detector. Without this discrimination, the detector of a car in traffic would be constantly on, making it useless in the only circumstance where it is likely to matter.

    2. Accidents between 2 and 4 wheel vehicles tend to happen when a 2 wheeler moves out of occlusion in an unexpected fashion, and/or when a 4 wheeler pulls on to the road - often out of a side road or car park. Often the 2 wheeler was NOT in line of sight when the decision to manouvre was made, and the driver was simply being too aggressive from the 2 wheeler safety POV - but a driver who wasn’t this aggressive probably wouldn’t be able to drive in urban traffic.

    To overcome these problems you’d need a very high investment system, with each 2 wheeler carrying a very precise GPS beacon and real-time dataflow.

    Ok… Looking at the OP some more, I can see that the proposal was for a transmitter based system rather than a radar like one, but seemingly using signal strength to deduce range. This might not give false positives from cars (but might, when a signal bounces off a car) but would only work in line of sight - making it no more useful than, say, a bright headlight or orange vest - and signal strength would be very hard to relate to range. Rain, other traffic, background RF noise, angle, road surface, etc would really mess things up.
