   Fantastic idea, but why is networking unnecessary? - Ringing the doorbell could trigger an alert on your PC and with a webcam & speakers you could have a proper conversation with the person at the door even if you are not at home. If it is a package you could advise a place where it can be secreted, or if it is Jehovah’s Witness you can delight in instructing them what they can do with their watchtower magazine…

   I’m with John on this one, throw in Wifi and a small camera and send me alerts on my PC.

   networking and camera integration is great for techies like us but the normal person just wants something to tell them when theres somebody at the door, so a simple device based on a current door bell, a button by the door and a ringer unit inside.

   Of course after you’ve got a basic unit then the skys the limit with being able to update your “ringtone” over the network, integrating cameras and remote viewing etc.

   Lets face it, any geek (and yed that includes me) who wants a camera on their front door will probably just build their own system with a web cam and motion detection.

   I Love the idea of a downloadable personalised door bell. MP3 technology has got to be getting cheap enough for a competitive price realtive to current door bells. Come to think of it the most advanced technology so far deployed is wireless. It must be cheapr to upgrade.

   well yesterday I saw in Asda (other supermarkets are available…) a 256mb MP3 player for under £10.

   I’ve been playing with micro processor programming recently and I’m gonna try and hook up a cheapo MP3 player see what comes of it.

   At less than £10 for the MP3 I would say this is a go. Haven’t looked closely but I would suggest that a total price under £20 for MP3 driven system would get a reasonable number of buyers to make a business!

    A good idea, and fairly simple to do. I’m sure you will see them on the market soon.
    I think a webcam etc is overkill though…. but I guess you could have the choice!
