Noel has come up with this striking idea which seems simple enough.Instead of having to physically measure the depth of tyre tread you could make the tyre in such a way that when you have worn the rubber down to the minimum limit (or nearly there) the rubber is a different colour, e.g. amber.  Then you would know when you had Amber tyres that they needed replacing, the rubber could change colour again if it wore below the legal limit and your tyres could change from amber to red.
